Match Punk
Match Punk is our new alternative. Scoring is smoother. Running events is easier. And victory is sweeter. Whether in a FLGS or at home, Friday Night Magic just got a whole lot better!
With Match Punk, each player keeps their own score with a phone right in front of them. Instead of awkwardly reaching across the table to swipe… just move a few inches to the right. Any updates made by opponents are updated on your phone automatically. Its straightforward. Obvious. Visible. What every MTG life counter should be.
Every subscriber can customize their own digital card. Upload fun pics, add details, descriptions, and attack/defense numbers. And make it good… because every time you lose, your opponent receives a copy of your card as a unique trophy!
Every group created comes with a private group chat. Use it to set up times to play, share news or events… or just straight-up talk trash. The app also has a forum with topics to discuss all things Magic.
A MTG Scorekeeper & Player Rating System
Because Magic: The Gathering is rarely a game of luck.
The better the deck… and the more clever the player … the more victory is expected. Even when friendly, MTG is competitive. It’s part of what makes it fun! But how do you represent growth? How do you know who is the best in your group? You need an objective, accurate way of determining skill levels.
Like most ranking tools, it only stacks wins.
The choices are limited: A) single-elimination, B) double-elimination, or C) round-robin tournaments. But this presents an obvious problem: not all wins are equal. Losing to a master is more impressive than blowing away a beginner.
Match Punk is an MTG life counter that measures SKILL.
It doesn’t just look at wins and losses. It takes our calculated combination of the ELO rating of everyone you play and the records of the past. Now, every W/L matters. As you improve, your ranking will follow suit. And each game tells you… and everyone in your group … who is best, who is getting better, and who needs to step it up!
Match Punk keeps track of each player’s life, score, poison count, and commander damage. We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel here; what matters is that it’s an MTG life counter that works. It’s intuitive. It’s foolproof. And best of all, it won’t crash midgame. Solo mode also available!
Create your own password-protected groups. Make some cut-throat and competitive MTG and others loosey-goosey Commander for laughs. Players can invite friends and store owners can invite regulars into as many groups as you want. Don’t worry: any match you play will only affect their W/L/rating/ranking in that particular group.
FLGS owners want their store filled with players. Obviously. But spending an afternoon organizing a tournament? Or a whole weekend calculating a summer’s worth of wins and losses? Hard pass. But with Match Punk, you can create a competitive tournament… or many groups with different game modes… with a few taps on your phone.
Create your groups, display them in store, and encourage visitors to join.
Plan events for each group. Run instantly or use MP’s player rankings to seed traditional tournaments.
Since wins and losses are tracked & ranked in the app, no need for players to stop playing & update an organizer.
Whether you play for rankings or bragging rights… Magic is better when matches matter.
Offer prizes or bonuses to the top performers of each competitive group.
Group rankings in the app reveal who is best… and who you need to beat to get better.
Will has played MTG for decades. Bill has developed software for decades. Will introduced Bill to Standard and Commander in 2024. Bill’s daughter married Will in August 2025.
They have a lot of fun playing together, in person. They attended some in-person events at their FLGS.
Both noticed that a new scoring and ranking app was needed. Both for small groups and local game store events.
One that didn’t crash and stayed by the players’ sides. One that worked for casual and competitive play.
Match Punk does not have in-app ads. And we never will. Guaranteed.
But you are probably aware of the phrase “If it’s free, then YOU are the product”. Well, not in this case. We promise to never sell your information. That leaves a usage-based pricing model. And… we are still discussing what will best for us, game stores, and our users. In the meantime, we encourage you to enjoy the fully functional app. Any fun, feedback, or sharing is much appreciated!
A Free Tool for Magic and Commander Damager Tracking
An MTG life counter is a device for the trading card game “Magic: The Gathering”. It allows individual players to track how much damage they have taken during a match. It keeps score, showing how close everyone is to being eliminated. It should also track opponent damage, poison damage and – in Commander – the damage done to the player by each opponent’s Commander card.
In Magic: The Gathering, players take damage from attacks by other players. Throughout the match, you will take damage, heal, deflect (etc.). Most games start at 20, while Commander games start at 40. The game is moving so fast that “just remember” is an unreliable method for keeping track of your health or wins. Having an online MTG life counter allows each player to track their life total… along with the total of all other players… using a phone next to them.
Magic is an extremely strategic game. Whether building a deck or bluffing opponents, players are always thinking three steps ahead. A single match is a heavy mental load and energy drain. A good MTG life tracker means one less thing to worry about. You don’t want to waste it trying to remember just how much damage is left. Instead, you focus entirely on the game.
For many players, a simple notepad will do. Others use physical dice or special dials made specifically for trading card games. But smartphones in every pocket have made digital MTG life counter apps accessible. There are no barriers to digital apps. They allow players to add or subtract life with a simple tap on your phone.
Depends. OG players may insist on keeping everything physical. However, your score can disappear from a knee banging into your table. And if you are playing Commander, tracking multiple stats can become a cluttered mess.
A digital MTG life counter app from the app store, on the other hand, centralizes everything. It handles complex tracking, saves game history, and … if you are using Match Punk… will weigh and rank everyone in your group. It also tracks way more than wins and losses. Match Punk tracks commander damage, poison counters, and energy counters, all in one place. These are key features a physical counter can’t match. In other words, a digital app streamlines your game with a clear, visible, simple display.
Complex bookkeeping is eliminated with simple design
Tracks everything (poison counters, CMDR damage, energy, etc.)
In other words, it should remove distractions and reduce details – leaving
you to focus on strategy, fun, and competing with your opponent.
Discover Why the Match Punk MTG Life Counter App Changes How You Play, Plan, and Compete
Game store owners care about games.
You wouldn’t run a FLGS if you felt otherwise. You care about a healthy gaming community. And you also care about filling your store as much as possible. A filled store means more cards, drinks, and accessories sold. Which means you keep getting to live out your passion.
None of these are mutually exclusive. You can use events… tournaments, competitions, game nights… to build the hobby, community, and revenue is through events. Its a win, win, win! But as stated above, Magic: The Gathering is a skill-based game. And skill is tested and proven when players compete.
The better constructed deck, strategy, and on-the-spot gameplay will win. Building your deck is an adventure. The gameplay is exciting. Hanging out with friends is fun. But all of these is diminished if there is a lack of friendly competition. Even the more relaxed Commander is less fun when the competitive balance feels off.
A FLGS creates a group for their store and announces an event.
On the night of the event, the admin creates the event in Match Punk for the night… 6pm -12pm.
The admin (usually game store owner) starts the event for a specific group with a single tap on the phone.
Every group member is initialized to a W/L of 0-0 for that Event, with an Elo of 1000. They must play a single game against another group member to be registered in the event.
Players start playing. As they win/lose, their rating and ranking will be updated within.
As more wins are stacked up, Match Punk adjusts your rankings. It weighs the values of previous wins/losses based on the ELO rating of opponents during the event.
At midnight, the event automatically ends and Match Punk instantly calculates the winner.
The Best MTG Life Counter App is also the Best Tool for Tournaments!
Everything you need to know about Matchpunk.
No. Every feature requires a profile. However, creating a profile is completely free, and only takes a few minutes.
Right now, MatchPunk is meant to be used with standard 2-player versions of Magic: The Gathering, TableTop, and Yu Gi Oh!. However, new games will be added all the time, with a 4+ player option very soon.
You create a Card that represents YOU in the matches you play. You are required to create a Card for any game you play using MatchPunk. When you play a match, you are “wagering” your Card. If you lose, your opponent is recorded as “owning” your Card. But don’t worry. It’s just for bragging rights…and you can win it back the next match you play.
A Group is composed of people who want to get together to play face-to-face tabletop games supported by MatchPunk.
For example, if you have a group of friends that plays Pokemon regularly, you can create a MatchPunk Group for Pokemon with your friends as members.
As another example, a local Game Store may create its own MatchPunk group, with people who come to the store all signing up as members. Be sure to ask your store if they have a Group!
All Face-to-Face matches are played as part of a Group. In the Group, each member’s Win-Loss Record, Elo Rating and Group Ranking are calculated after every match. Wins and Losses in one group do not affect the Win-Loss record, Rating, or Ranking in any other group.
Groups all have a private (Group members only) chat feature.
When you first sign up with MatchPunk and create a card for a game, you are automatically part of the General Group for that game. You can always play a match against anyone as part of this group.
A MatchPunk Group Leader (the one who created the Group) can create an Event in that Group. When an Event is created, it is shown as “Upcoming”. The Group Leader can start the Event at any time, making the event “Active”. Any games played as part of the Group during an Event contribute to the Rating and Ranking in the Event as well as the Group. The Group Leader can end the event at any time, making the event “Past”. At this point, the Rating and Ranking in the Event are frozen and cannot be changed.
Events are a great way for a Group Leader to schedule a tournament or challenge competition in the Group.
